Pirelli to extend contract in F1 beyond 2013?
The current contract for Pirelli to supply tyres to Formula 1 runs out at the end of 2013. Will Pirelli, Bridgestone Michelin, or Cooper-Avon supply tyres for the 2014 season and beyond?
As a betting man I’d think Pirelli will take a lot of beating, the tyres have been a talking point all season, but they have settled down a bit, and we haven’t had repeats of the early races of the 2011 season where there were 70+ pit stops in one race.
Personally I’d like to see a limit on 2 sets of tyres for the race, but I fully expect Bernie Ecclestone to do a deal with Pirelli to let them supply the tyres well beyond 2014. Maybe a deal for 2014-2016.
Obviously it will come down to which company offers to supply the tyres for the lowest cost to the teams, but if you remove Vettel’s dominance this season, you’d have had a really close fought season between 3 teams, and I think the first season of turbos in 2014 will require some constants, and the tyres should be one of them!
New V6 turbo engines, 8 speed gearboxes, AND new tyres would / could cause massive performance differentials, which is not good for close racing….
